A chaplain’s presence can have a calming and peaceful effect in prisons. In times of loneliness and despair, a chaplain can be well positioned to be an independent, compassionate advocate. They provide pastoral care and support to men and women held in our regional prisons. We also extend care and support to their families.
There is a Catholic prison chaplain in all New Zealand public prisons. The service is supported in full by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops and the Department of Corrections. They work alongside numerous Inter-denominational chaplaincy groups.
In a typical week chaplains will conduct prayer, meditation, music and sacramental liturgies, Bible studies and help organise other programmes such as Seasons for Growth.
