Who We Are
Catholic Social Services (CSS) is part of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland. We provide social work, counselling, chaplaincy services and community support to individuals and whānau.
Our services are open to everyone, regardless of faith, culture, background, age, gender, or circumstances. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where people feel respected, heard, and supported.
What Makes Us Different?
We don't believe people should be defined by their circumstances. We see the person before the problem, recognising the important role that family, whānau, relationships, culture, and community play in helping people find belonging, purpose, and connection.
Whether someone comes to us seeking social work support, counselling, advocacy, family violence intervention, psychotherapy, chaplaincy, or professional supervision, our focus remains the same: building relationships, recognising strengths, and supporting people to make decisions that are right for them.
A Legacy of Service
Born out of the challenges of the Great Depression, Catholic Social Services began in the 1930s as a response to the growing needs of vulnerable children, young people, and families.
In response, the Diocese began supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families through initiatives such as the Big Brother Movement and partnerships with community and welfare services.
More than 90 years later, that commitment to standing alongside people in times of need remains at the heart of everything we do.
How We Work
We know that asking for help isn't always easy. That's why we focus on building genuine relationships and creating safe spaces where people can talk openly about what's happening in their lives.
Our approach is:
- Person-centred and guided by what matters most to you
- Respectful of culture, identity, and lived experience
- Inclusive and welcoming
- Trauma-informed and strengths-based
- Grounded in partnership, choice, and self-determination
- Committed to the safety and wellbeing of individuals, families, and whānau
Rather than focusing on what's wrong, we focus on what's strong and work alongside people to build on the strengths, resilience, and support networks that already exist.
